George Gipp Recreation Area & Ice Arena

The George Gipp Recreation Area located on the corner of Isle Royale and Second Streets hosts four ball fields, the Billy Miller Memorial field and three little league fields.   A basketball court, a tennis court, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, bocheball and children’s playground are open from May through November.

The George Gipp Arena (formerly known as the Bicentennial Arena) is open annually from November through March and hosts public skating, hockey, figure skating and private rentals.  The arena is located at 200 Isle Royale Street.   Laurium has housed many ice rinks in it’s past, most notably the Palestra built in 1900 era.  Theodore Roosevelt gave a campaign speech at the Palestra during his candidacy.  The Superior Ice Palace was located on Isle Royale and Third Streets and was the first indoor ice rink.  After the streetcars were disconnected the car barn was used as an ice rink, followed by the Laurium Airport hanger.
