George Gipp Memorial Park

George Gipp Memorial ParkGeorge Gipp is a legend in Laurium.  George Gipp was born at 432 Hecla Street in Laurium on February 18, 1895.  He attended Calumet Public Schools.  Gipp participated in track, football, baseball, and hockey.  He went on to a four year 32 game football career at Notre Dame leading his team to a 27 win, 2 loss and 3 tie record.  Gipp died of an infection in 1920.  Leading to the famous statement “Win one for the Gipper.”  Property for the George Gipp Memorial

Daniell Park

Daniel ParkDaniell Park, located on the corner of Pewabic and Third Streets, was donated to the Village of Laurium in 1937 Joshua Daniell for use as a public park. The WPA then constructed a concrete band shell atop a poor rock foundation. The park was used occasionally from the 1940’s through 1970’s.  The park was renovated in 1974 by the Village Street Department.

George Gipp Recreation Area & Ice Arena

The George Gipp Recreation Area located on the corner of Isle Royale and Second Streets hosts four ball fields, the Billy Miller Memorial field and three little league fields.   A basketball court, a tennis court, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, bocheball and children’s playground are open from May through November.
