Public Works

Laurium's Department of Public Works (DPW) consists of five full-time employees. The primary responsibilities of the Department of Public Works consist of snow removal during the winter. During the summer months the DPW repairs any roadways that have been damaged throughout the year. Additionally, the DPW provides year-round garbage service to the Village and maintains all of the Village’s parks.

Waste Services

  • Garbage service is provided to all village residents. Third Street and south have pick up on Tuesdays and residents living north of Third Street have collection on Thursdays. Check the web site or newspaper for any changes due to a Holiday falling on your pick-up day. Garbage is limited to two cans and a reasonable number of bags each week. Special bags or cans are not required. Garbage cans are to be in good condition and 32 gallons or less. Village approved 96 gallon garbage carts may be purchased at our cost. To start or stop service at a residence, please call the Village Office at 906-337-1600 to make arrangements.

  • Each spring and fall, DPW provides a leaf and branch pickup. Residents can rake leaves and yard waste (or use biodegradable bags) to the curb for pickup by the front end loader. The dates of these clean ups are scheduled when weather permits.

  • During the summer, the leaf and branch pile is open M-F from 6:30am-1:30pm. This composting area is located behind the baseball fields. Residents can drop off unbagged leaves, branches, and compostable yard & garden waste. No other items can be left there.

  • Furniture, such as couches, stuffed chairs, floor model TVs, mattresses and box springs, are collected at an extra charge. Please contact the Village Office at 906-337-1600 to make payment arrangements prior to pickup.

  • The village does not collect appliances or other metal objects, tires, batteries, animals, asbestos, chemical products, dirt or rocks, hazardous waste, herbicides & pesticides, industrial waste, medical waste, oils, paint (except completely dried out), propane tanks, radioactive materials, or solvents with garbage service. If you are in question about whether an item can be picked up, please contact us for clarification.
