This park was donated to the Village of Laurium in 1937 Joshua Daniell for use as a public park. The WPA then constructed a concrete band shell atop a poor rock foundation. The park was used occasionally from the 1940’s through 1970’s.  The park was renovated in 1974 by the Village Street Department.  Many local and visiting musicians have enjoyed the pleasure of performing at this unique outdoor venue during the annual summer concert series which started in 1985.

  • The George Gipp Recreation Area located on the corner of Isle Royale and Second Streets hosts four ball fields, the Billy Miller Memorial field and three little league fields.   A basketball court, a tennis court, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits, bocheball and children’s playground are open from May through November.

The George Gipp Arena (formerly known as the Bicentennial Arena) is open annually from November through March and hosts public skating, hockey, figure skating and private rentals.  The arena is located at 200 Isle Royale Street.   Laurium has housed many ice rinks in it’s past, most notably the Palestra built in 1900 era.  Theodore Roosevelt gave a campaign speech at the Palestra during his candidacy.  The Superior Ice Palace was located on Isle Royale and Third Streets and was the first indoor ice rink.  After the streetcars were disconnected the car barn was used as an ice rink, followed by the Laurium Airport hanger.

  • General admission for open skate is $3.

    A 60-minute ice rental is $150, and a 90-minute ice rental is $200.

George Gipp Memorial Park

George Gipp is a legend in Laurium.  George Gipp was born at 432 Hecla Street in Laurium on February 18, 1895.  He attended Calumet Public Schools.  Gipp participated in track, football, baseball, and hockey.  He went on to a four year 32 game football career at Notre Dame leading his team to a 27 win, 2 loss and 3 tie record.  Gipp died of an infection in 1920.  Leading to the famous statement “Win one for the Gipper.”  Property for the George Gipp Memorial Park, located on the corner of Lake Linden Avenue and Tamarack Streets was donated to the Village of Laurium by John Niemela (proprietor of Niemela Market).  The park was dedicated on August 3, 1935.
